Zombie Highway: A Driving Game…With Zombies

If there’s anything we learned from the App Store, it’s that there are innumerable ways to enjoy a zombie infestation.  Joining the iPhone’s endless stream of undead treatments is Zombie Highway, a violently-amusing driving game with zombies galore.

You spend the game driving around post-apocalypse America in a car.  Instead of racing other drivers or avoiding obstacles, though, your goal is to just step on the gas, while zombies pop up from all over trying to stop you.

In Zombie Highway, you get seven varieties of the undead – from the skinny, underpowered ones to health-generating hulking types.  Evading them is easier said than done, as the mutants will literally work their asses off, trying to tip your car over.  They’ll cling on to your vehicle, pilling in numbers, until you either manage to get them off or your car eventually topples to the side.

You can get rid of zombies by sideswiping them onto the many wrecked cars that litter the highway.  It takes more than one hit, though, as each zombie has its own health bar.  Fortunately, you’ve got an arms dealer friend riding with you, so you can use his stash of weapons to further damage your assailants.  New weapons are gradually unlocked the more you play.

Three things really stand out in the game: brilliant driving physics, aggressive zombie enemies and very crisp 3D graphics.  On the downside, sound effects are nearly non-existent – you’ll likely just have as much enjoyment if you mute the damn game.

Overall, Zombie Highway makes for an addicting experience.  There’s not much beyond the simple premise, but the execution is really engaging.  You can get it from the App Store for 99 cents.

Android and iPhone Cross Platform Multiplayer Enabled Thanks to Skies of Glory

Although there are tittles out there like Raging Thunder 2 and Homerun Battle 3D that allow iPhone owners to join Android users in gaming sessions, this new title is a bomb. We’re talking about SGN’s Skies of Glory, that gets shown in action at the end of the article.

Skies of Glory is an aerial dogfighting game, that has recently been ported to Android (2.0 and above), being able to communicate with iOS device via WiFi, Bluetooth or 3G.

Let’s hope that such cross-platform action will expand to MeeGo, Windows Phone 7, BlackBerry 6 and Symbian…

Nokia’s official statement about the antenna design

As we’ve all seen, Apple had mentioned Nokia in their press conference today regarding the iPhone4. I wanted to take a moment and send you a statement regarding Nokia’s own antenna design and function.

Antenna design is a complex subject and has been a core competence at Nokia for decades, across hundreds of phone models. Nokia was the pioneer in internal antennas; the Nokia 8810, launched in 1998, was the first commercial phone with this feature.

Nokia has invested thousands of man hours in studying human behavior, including how people hold their phones for calls, music playing, web browsing and so on. As you would expect from a company focused on connecting people, we prioritize antenna performance over physical design if they are ever in conflict.

In general, antenna performance of a mobile device/phone may be affected with a tight grip, depending on how the device is held. That’s why Nokia designs our phones to ensure acceptable performance in all real life cases, for example when the phone is held in either hand. Nokia has invested thousands of man hours in studying how people hold their phones and allows for this in designs, for example by having antennas both at the top and bottom of the phone and by careful selection of materials and their use in the mechanical design.

Apple addresses iPhone 4 antenna problems – free bumper cases for all

Apple addressed the iPhone 4 antennagate/Death Grip issues in a press conference Friday and CEO Steve Jobs admitted there was a problem but insinuated it was being overblown by the press. Still, the company will be giving out free bumper cases to all impacted users.

The company reiterated that the reception issues weren’t exclusive to the iPhone 4 and its stainless steel band which doubles as the antenna. Apple showed a video of phones like the BlackBerry Bold 9700, Droid Eris and Samsung Omnia II experiencing signal loss when held in certain ways.

“We’re not perfect. Phones aren’t perfect. We know that, you know that,” Jobs said.

Apple said it knew that if the iPhone 4 were gripped in a certain way the bars would go down just like every smartphone. The company said that despite the uproar in the media, its AppleCare data suggests only .55% of users have complained about this directly to Apple by calling in. Additionally, the company said the return rate for the Apple iPhone 4 is 1.7%. For comparison’s sake, the iPhone 3Gs had a return rate of 6%.

Jobs also said the iPhone 4 drops less than one call per 100 compared to the 3GS.

The company will be giving out free cases to users through September 30 and those who have already purchased one will get a refund. Users will be able to apply for this through Apple’s website shortly and it will offer a variety of cases. It’s a good move by Apple to appease users but those cases really do kill the aesthetics of the iPhone 4.

The press conference was necessary because the Apple iPhone 4 antenna problems slowly became a major issue. The first few reports were generally scattered and could be associated with launch-day issues. But once Consumer Reports took back its recommendation, Apple knew it could have a problem with the mainstream.

Jobs also said the elusive white iPhone 4 will be available at the end of July in limited quantities and that an upcoming software update will boost the proximity sensor.

Apple KNEW! Engineer Warned Jobs of Antenna Problems

According to reports, senior engineer and antenna expert at Apple, Ruben Caballero warned management that the device may drop calls and hurt reception. A similar warning was issued to Apple by a carrier partner. Yet Apple continued with the design as planned as it allowed for a thinner and lighter handset. Sounds like Apple headed straight for the iceberg on this one despite warning.

Top Gear Makes Fun of Apple’s iPhone 4 and Its Signal Issues

One of the most popular discussion topics this summer, aside from the World Cup was the iPhone 4 signal issues. Even Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson said that the Stig doesn’t work properly, if held the wrong way. This is pretty much a metaphor for the iPhone 4 issues.

In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past month, here’s the deal: the iPhone 4, if held in the left hand and with the user’s palm covering its lower left side, can lose signal and drop calls. Apple’s only answer to this was “hold the iPhone 4 in some other way” and “a software fix is coming”. There was no talk about a hardware issue, till now…

LOL video – How to hold the iPhone 4 right (Antenna Problems)

Oh no! Seems like you are not allowed to touch the two antennas around the new iPhone 4, otherwise it looses reception! That’s why Rory Sinclair wrote an email to Steve Jobs explaining the problem. He asks: “Is it possible this is a design flaw?” Jobs answer: “You’re holding it wrong!”. Maybe we can find an explanation of how to hold it “right” at the introduction keynote of the iPhone 4…
