LG launches SU2300 and SU950/KU9500 Android smartphones in South Korea; Confuses the world with its naming scheme

LG has launched two new Android and Snapdragon powered smartphones – LG-SU2300 and LG-SU950/KU9500.

The first of the two is the same device as the LG2300 aka Aloha, which we knew is coming since the beginning of April. For some reason, the Korean company decided to use a different name for its domestic market. I assume that’s because their Korea-slated phones come with T-DMB mobile TV functionality.

The other phone, LG-SU950/KU9500, is an all-touchscreen device (SU2300 comes with a side-sliding QWERTY keyboard) with pretty much the same specs. We think this is the same phone as the LG P950, which again changed name to “appeal” to the Koreans.

Both LG-SU2300 and LG-SU950/KU9500 rock 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 3.5-inch WVGA AMOLED touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera, Dolby mobile surround sound, mentioned T-DMB mobile TV capability, WiFi and GPS. In addition, LG talks about their own service/app called “LG Air Sync” which should allow users to share and backup their data (contacts, media files and so on) with friends and their computers. Moreover, there’s the “Scan Search” augmented reality application pre-installed on both devices.

The LG SU2300 is set to start selling in Korean in May, when users will be able to get it with Android 1.6, only to update to version 2.1 later in July-August. As for the LG-SU950/KU9500, it will be released in June, sporting Android 2.1 right from the bat. KT and SK Telecom will get to carry both phones.

Brilliant Pianists Uses iPad, Stuns Concert Goers

The iPad is reaching to all the public segments and musicians couldn’t stay aside and watch the tablet bloom, right? A proof of the Apple tablet’s success is the recent initiative of Chinese pianist Lang Lang, who played a piano app on the device, during a concert at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco.

He simply pulled out the tablet and started playing Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Flight of the Bumblebee”, during the encore section of the show. The crowd was stunned and even the conductor tried the gizmo. It was all done with the aid of the Magic Piano iPad app from Smule.

Nokia N8 goes official with 12MP camera and HD video

After a couple of weeks of speculations, we’ve just learned that Nokia N8 is a real handset, packing a 12 megapixel camera and other neat features. The device will be available starting Q3 with a EUR 370 price tag, before taxes. Nokia N8’s camera features Carl Zeiss optics, Xenon flash and HD quality video capture.

The new device runs Symbian^3, a new platform that we’ve seen in action at the tech shows that took place this year. N8’s platform comes with innovations, like multitouch gestures, flick scrolling and pinch-zoom, plus customizable homescreens (apps and widgets) and 2D/3D graphics architecture. Multitasking is also on board, thanks to apps that run in parallel.

Nokia’s new product incorporates video/photo editing software, that’s intuitive and allows you to mess with content on the go. Also, the handset can be plugged into a home theatre system, for more fun and taking full advantage of its support for HD video and Dolby Digital Plus surround. The device supports access to Web TV services and Ovi Store.

Social networking via a single homescreen app and global Maps walk and drive navigation (free) are available on the smartphone, too, while developers will be interested to learn that there’s an extra bundled for them. Nokia announced that N8 is the first device to integrate Qt, a software development environment, that allows specialists to build apps and deploy them on Symbian and other platforms.

RIM announces BlackBerry Bold 9650 and Pearl 3G, sort of

Two new BlackBerry smartphones are coming right next month. The candybar duo Bold 9650 and Pearl 3G leaves the old-fashioned trackball in favor of the fancy trackpad.

BlackBerry Bold 9650 and Pearl 3G share common specs – hi-res screen, 3.2 megapixel camera, microSD card slot and the full connectivity package – Wi-Fi, GPS, 3G and Bluetooth.

The Pearl 3G supports the latest Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n standard, while the Bold 9650 relies on the previous b/g one. Still, the new Bold will be released in both GSM and CDMA versions, but the Pearl 3G won’t be available for the CDMA users.

BlackBerry Bold 9650 (in CDMA obviously) will be available from Sprint USA starting next month. The Pearl 3G will hit Canada through Bell, TELUS and Rogers most probably the same time. Other market availability and pricing are yet to be announced.

Nokia E72 gets a major firmware update (version 31.023)

Nokia has released a new firmware update (version 31.023) for its E72 smartphone. Aside from fixing many of the known bugs, the new firmware also bring some new applications along with updates to existing apps. Here’s the recap:

  • New pre-installed apps include Ovi Sync, Advance Communication Manager (which gives extra call functionality such as black lists), Smart Connect and Internet radio.
  • Updated were Ovi Maps (free navigation and location sharing version included!), Web (now in version 7.2 – brings full support for Flash Lite 3.1 in the web environment), Ovi Store (v1.5.436), Share online (v4.3.10.02), My Nokia (1.4) and the Start up and Email wizards (v2.1 and v2.05, respectively).

At the moment, the new firmware is only available via Nokia Software Updater, meaning you’ll have to connect your E72 to your PC to update it. Over-the-air update will most certainly follow soon.
