Samsung CorbyF Shows Up On Official Website

A new flip phone just went up on Samsung’s South Korean website under the ever-growing Corby line.  Called the Samsung CorbyF (the F stands for Folder), the handset bundles a fun, playful design, along with smooth, curvy lines.

Intended for mid-range to low-end markets, the device borrows the youthful style available from previous cellphones in the series, making it a bit more attractive than the form you usually find on flip-style phones.  Otherwise, it seems like a conventional clamshell, with regular, non-touchscreen displays.

The 15.9mm-thick Samsung CorbyF features a 2.6-inch internal LCD (QVGA resolution), an external LED display (unspecified size), a 3.0 megapixel camera module, a video-calling front camera, DMB TV, SOS calling, subway maps and microSD card extension (up to 16GB).  It supports HSDPA 3.6Mbps (for SK Telecom and KT, not sure for non-Korean versions).

From the looks of it, this will be running Samsung’s default non-touch interface, which isn’t really anything special, despite being quite easy to use.   The device will come in Candy Pink, Lime Green and Blue Black colors.

There’s no exact pricing nor availability date, but Samsung says the CorbyF should come to South Korea soon.  Since it’s coming out with the the usually-affordable Corby branding, expect it to be generally inexpensive.

iPhone LCD vs Nexus One OLED: the Display Duel

The folks of displaymate.com have recently made a scientific analysis, comparing the Apple iPhone LCD to the OLED display on the Nexus One. The iPhone 3GS’ screen is not perfect, but it seems that it’s better than the one on the Google Nexus One.

The analysts claim that the HTC Google Phone might seem to provide eye candy, but it suffers from noise and lack of accuracy. This screen supports a 800 x 480 resolution, higher than the iPhone’s 480 x 320. Nexus One’s display is made by Samsung and it uses a PenTile pixel arrangement, less sharper than the LCD equivalent.

Moving on to the iPhone, we learn that its screen supports 18 bit color and it can even emulate 24 bit color with dithering. Nexus One only uses 16 bit color, allowing 32 possible intensity levels for red and blue and 64 for green. Another flaw is that the factory Calibration and quality control are very poor.

Nokia Announce N97 Mini Gold Edition

Sensitive to people’s ever-changing needs and clearly aware of the recessional return to a gold-standard in investment, Nokia have issued a Nokia N97 mini Gold Edition.

The N97 mini Gold Edition is swathed in 18-carat gold and comes pre-loaded with apps like “ELLE 360Fashion”, which should help couture lovers stay up to date with all the latest trends and fashion-related news.

Other than that, the Nokia N97 mini Gold Edition has the same features the regular edition includes: 3.2 inch touchscreen display with 360 x 640 pixels, full QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi, HSPA, GPS, Nokia Maps, 3.5mm headset jack, 8GB of internal memory, and a 5MP camera with autofocus and LED flash.

In terms of user experience, there’s little between the N97 Mini UI and a basic smart phone like the Nokia 5800, however after a recent review of the handset the N97 mini proved itself as a truly delicious bit of hardware: the tilted pull-out QWERTY is one of the best in the business!

Nokia N97 mini Gold Edition will be available across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa, when exactly we’re not so sure.

Google Earth for Android 2.1 Arrives

Google has announced the release of the latest version of Google Earth for handsets running Android 2.1. This version, which is expected to work flawlessly on the Nexus One according to Google, comes with a new “Roads” layer which was until now found on the desktop version of Google Earth.
Google adds that this latest version of Google Earth happens to be the most technically demanding version for phones yet and that the Nexus One should be able to run it smoothly – thanks to its 1Ghz Snapdragon processor and 3D graphics support. The new version also supports Voice commands, which will allow users to navigate to a location on the map by just saying the name of the place. Users can also browse photos, places, and businesses – just like on the desktop. Google Earth will be available in Android Market on most devices that have Android 2.1 or later versions. Even the Motorola Droid, which is set to receive the 2.1 Update, will be able to run this version without issues.
If you happen to own a Google Nexus One or a device that has been updated to Android 2.1, head to the Android Market to get your own copy.
