The Tab has landed – the Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab tablet just went official, confirming many of its rumored specs. The 7″ tablet has full voice call functionality, up to 7 hours of video playback, DivX and Flash videos included and the excellent Android web browser that has plenty of room to stretch its legs on the WSVGA screen.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is centered around a 7″ TFT screen with 1024×600 pixels resolution, driven by a Cortex-A8 processor running at 1GHz, 512MB RAM and PowerVR SGX540 graphics.

The OS running the show is Android 2.2 Froyo, of course, but without the TouchWiz skin. Samsung have concentrated on providing and excellent app package instead.

The Tab has GSM/GPRS/EDGE along with HSPA-enhanced 3G connectivity. Both for voice and data, SMS and MMS too. It even has a front-facing 1.3MP camera for video calls. On the back, there’s a second camera – a 3MP auto-focus snapper with LED flash.

The Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab is big for a phone but compact for a 7″ tablet, it measures 190.1 x 120.5 x 11.98mm and weighs 380g. The reduced weight compared to the iPad is in part due to the smaller size and because the Tab has a plastic body.

There are two options for the built-in memory – 16GB or 32GB, which is expandable using microSD cards up to 32GB. The connectivity of the Samsung Galaxy Tab is rounded off by Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi b/g/n and an Apple-like 30 pin data connector.

And an HDMI will come in handy – the extensive video codec support (DivX, XviD, H.264, Flash 10.1 too) and the 4000 mAh battery that has enough juice for up to 7 hours of movies. The tab handles HD resolutions with ease too.

Samsung have added the Readers Hub, which boasts access to 2 million books and thousands of magazines and newspapers, joining on the tablet assault on eReaders. If the apps that come preloaded on the Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab aren’t enough, you have full access to the Android market. We’re not sure whether most apps there would be fit for the Tab’s 1024×600 pixel resolution.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab will launch in Europe in mid-September (Italy first) and expand to the US, Asia and Korea in the months to follow.

As the year goes forward, the line between tablets and smartphones is only bound to get even more muddled, with size likely playing the biggest difference between the two categories. Take this just-announced ViewSonic ViewPad 7, a 7-inch Android tablet, fitted with complete phone functionalities.

While ViewSonic is mainly associated with LCD and plasma displays, the company has long been rumored to be at work on their own smartphone. We guess the tablet is a logical first foray into mobile electronics, as it’s a considerably less mature market than the now-crowded smartphone space.

Details of the ViewPad 7 include a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen (800 x 480 resolution), a rear-facing 3.0 megapixel camera module, a front-facing VGA webcam, onboard gyro-sensor, WiFi, 3G (both for phone and data) and microSD card expansion (up to 32GB). Hopefully, there’s a way you can put this up to your face when making calls just like a real phone – that would be entertaining.

No word has been given about the tablet’s innards (e.g. processor, RAM), so we’ll have to see what kind of hardware it’s packing under the case. It’s running Android 2.2 Froyo, along with the usual Google suite and a few pre-installed apps (such as an ebook reader). Full phone features include standard voice calling, SMS, MMS and VOIP.

The ViewSonic ViewPad 7 will be part of the company’s exhibit at the IFA 2010 in Berlin, which is slated to begin this coming September 3rd. Review units will be available starting October, with UK pricing expected to be no more than £350 (around $540), including VAT.

If there’s anything we learned from the App Store, it’s that there are innumerable ways to enjoy a zombie infestation. Joining the iPhone’s endless stream of undead treatments is Zombie Highway, a violently-amusing driving game with zombies galore.

You spend the game driving around post-apocalypse America in a car. Instead of racing other drivers or avoiding obstacles, though, your goal is to just step on the gas, while zombies pop up from all over trying to stop you.

In Zombie Highway, you get seven varieties of the undead – from the skinny, underpowered ones to health-generating hulking types. Evading them is easier said than done, as the mutants will literally work their asses off, trying to tip your car over. They’ll cling on to your vehicle, pilling in numbers, until you either manage to get them off or your car eventually topples to the side.

You can get rid of zombies by sideswiping them onto the many wrecked cars that litter the highway. It takes more than one hit, though, as each zombie has its own health bar. Fortunately, you’ve got an arms dealer friend riding with you, so you can use his stash of weapons to further damage your assailants. New weapons are gradually unlocked the more you play.

Three things really stand out in the game: brilliant driving physics, aggressive zombie enemies and very crisp 3D graphics. On the downside, sound effects are nearly non-existent – you’ll likely just have as much enjoyment if you mute the damn game.

Overall, Zombie Highway makes for an addicting experience. There’s not much beyond the simple premise, but the execution is really engaging. You can get it from the App Store for 99 cents.

If you’ve been keeping up with the gadget rumor sites, you’ve probably seen the Nokia 5250 numerous times. The company finally made the oft-leaked device official, confirming it as a music-centric touchscreen phone that offers great value for your money.

Running the Symbian^1 operating system (aka S60 5th edition), it brings Nokia’s old UI, along with all the features that long-time users of the Finnish company’s phones should be familiar with. Designed for heavy music users, it features a music player right on the home screen, along with instant access to Ovi Music Unlimited, an all-you-can-download music service available for selected territories. Other musical talents include an FM radio and a mobile version of Guitar Hero 5 pre-installed.

The Nokia 5250 has a 2.8-inch touchscreen (640 x 360 resolution, 16:9 display ratio), a 2.0 megapixel camera module, quad-band GSM/EDGE/GPRS, stereo Bluetooth and microSD card expansion (up to 16GB). It’s extremely pocketable too, measuring 104mm x 49mm x 14mm. Battery is rated at 7 hours of talk time and 24 hours of music playback.

Aside from the music features, it’s quite generous on the social capabilities. You get to add your favorite contacts right on the home screen, along with quick access to email accounts and social networks. It also has access to downloadable apps via the Ovi Store.

Pricing for the Nokia 5250 is set at an enticing €115 (around $145) before taxes and subsidies, with shipping slated for the fourth quarter. For a touchscreen feature phone with Ovi Music Unlimited and an affable design, it definitely sounds like a nice offer.

Nokia has announced a new candybar that delivers a refreshing change for the form factor. Called the Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type, the feature phone boasts both a touchscreen and an alphanumeric keypad right on the handset’s front panel.

Running the company’s old feature phone OS, it’s one of the few S40 devices to have a touchscreen on board (a couple of them have previously been released for the Chinese market), making it one of the more interesting non-smartphones to come out from the Finnish company. We’re not sure how well S40 will work on a touchscreen, though, so that should be something to watch out for (or be wary of, if you’re thinking of buying one).

Details of the Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type include a 2.4-inch touchscreen (320 x 240 resolution), a 5.0 megapixel camera module with video recording, Bluetooth 2.1, FM radio with RDS, 3.5mm audio jack and microSD card expansion (up to 16GB). Connectivity suite is pretty complete, with both WiFi and 3G with HSPA on board.

Since it’s running S40, you should expect Nokia’s familiar messaging strengths, along with support for Java applications. Communities, an app for access to social networking sites Facebook and Twitter, will come preloaded. From the photos, the handset looks notably attractive too, with nice sharp lines, a brushed aluminum finish and a slim 9.6 mm profile.

The Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type is slated for availability in multiple markets before the end of the third quarter, priced at €125 ($161) before taxes and subsidies. It will come in five color versions (White Silver, Petrol Blue, Lilac, Pink and Dark Metal).
