Sony Ericsson unveiled Xperia arc S at Sony’s press conference in conjunction with IFA in Berlin. Taking the award-winning sleek design from Xperia arc,the latest addition to the Xperia family has a processor upgraded to 1.4Ghz, Sony 3D sweep panorama technology and access to the Sony Entertainment Network services – “Music Unlimited” and “Video Unlimited”. Xperia arc S features 25% faster camera start up and media conversion , along with 20% faster web page rendering compared to Xperia arc.

Samsung launches Galaxy Note

Samsung seems to be going super strong with its Galaxy line of smartphones and tablets. Since the very first Android mobile phone that they had christened as the Samsung Galaxy, every subsequent Galaxy line of devices have been a leap of innovation and marketing panacea over the previousone.Without a doubt, it was Apple that revolutionized the tablet computer segment. However, Apple’s insistence of force feeding the 10″ form factor to the consumers helped Samsung (and a few other OEMs) take advantage. Of the situation and introduce new markets of their own.

After the 7-inch Galaxy Tab, Samsung also launched the second iteration of the Android (Honeycomb) tablet in both the 10.1-inch and 8.9-inch displays. Finally yesterday, Samsung also announced a Galaxy Tab 7.7″ and another 5.3-inch tablet (or a phone?) called the Galaxy Note.

Well, before Samsung, Dell had also launched a 5-inch phone called Streak. Unfortunately, Dell did not manage to garner much enthusiasm for that form factor and had decided to discontinue the same.

Samsung says they’ve done something different with the Note. The Galaxy Note is a new category of product, developed through Samsung’s deep consumer understanding and insight,” Samsung said. “It combines core on-the-go benefits of various mobile devices while maintaining smartphone portability to create a whole new user experience.”

One novelty with the Galaxy Note: it comes with a stylus called the S Pen.

The artistic freedom of a paper notebook is coupled with the benefits of Samsung’s smartphone technology and services, allowing users to create, edit and share with more style than ever before,” said JK Shin, president of Samsung’s mobile communications business, in a statement.

The phone comes with an app called S Memo that can store handwritten notes and drawings. It also accommodates pictures, voice recordings, and typed text.

The Galaxy Note also acts more like a tablet than a phone. In addition to multitouch pinch-to-zoom finger-based input, the aforementioned stylus, dubbed the ‘S Pen’ tucks into the bottom panel of the phone, and can be used in a variety of apps. In the Messaging App, for example, you can write on the screen, and the Galaxy Note will convert your scrawls to email or SMS messages with the aid of predictive text. In the browser, you use the pen to annotate, then capture Web pages with your notes. Input with the pen was very responsive, and as long as I wrote neatly, text conversion worked well. Besides integration with the native apps, Samsung plans to release an SDK for the S Pen so developers can write third-party apps that use it for input.

Hardware specs of the Samsung Galaxy Note include a dual-core 1.4GHz processor, a Super AMOLED screen, an 8-megapixel main camera that can record 1080p video, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, 802.11 b/g/n support for Wi-Fi, and HSPA+ 21Mbps 850/900/1900/2100 mobile network support.

Symbian Anna Officially Released

The long wait is over for Symbian users. The new Firmware Symbian Anna has officially been released and it’s available via Ovi Suite or FOTA for many variants of the phones N8, E7, C7 and C6-01.

Improved text input

There’s a portrait QWERTY keyboard for fast, single-handed typing.
There’s also a split-screen view while you’re typing, so you can see the web pages, forms and message threads you’re replying to.

Near-Field Communications

Flashlite 4, Java Runtime 2.2, Qt Mobility 1.1 and Qt 4.7 bring things up-to-date for developers.

Sony Ericsson Announces New Phones: Xperia Ray, Xperia Active And Txt

Get ready for a new gaggle of Sony Ericsson phones, as they just announced a threesome over at the Communicasia show in Singapore. These phones consist of: the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray, the the Sony Ericsson Xperia Active And the Sony Ericsson Txt.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray

The more premium of the trio, the Xperia Ray takes on a slate form factor that measures a mere 9.4mm in thickness and weighs 100 g. Details include a 1GHz processor, a 3.3-inch Bravia capacitive touchscreen (854 x 480 resolution), an 8.1 megapixel camera module (with an Exmor R backlit sensor), a front-facing videocam, aGPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G with HSPA, 300MB of user-available storage and microSD card expansion. It will be available in four colors (black, gold, pink and red) globally beginning in the third quarter. No pricing has been given.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Active

The sporty number of the bunch, the Xperia Active brings a funky design and plenty of rugged talents. Designed for use during physical activity, it comes with a built-in hook slot on the corner, so you can hang it on a neck band or the side of your mountaineering backpack. The case is dust-proof and water-resistant up to one meter, while the screen can brush off scratches and even respond to wet fingers.

Details include a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 3-inch capacitive touchscreen (480 x 320 resolution), a 5.0 megapixel camera (with LED flash), aGPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G with HSPA, DLNA and microSD card expansion. No pricing, but launch is expected in the third quarter as well.

The lowly feature phone of the trio, the Txt sports a QWERTY candybar form factor, along with a blindingly bright finish. Details are scarce, but it will have a 2.6-inch LCD and a Friends app that aggregates your social network updates. Like the other two, it will be available in the third quarter.

Nokia N9 Officially Announced: Runs MeeGo, Uses 3.9 Inch AMOLED Display (Video)

Nokia N9 aka Lankku was finally announced at Nokia Connection 2011. This AMOLED screen device runs MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan and its design doesn’t included a sliding QWERTY keyboard, in spite of previous speculations on this theme.

This model will come with apps and games such as Angry Birds Magic, Galaxy on Fire, Real Golf 2011 and OpenGL ES 2.0 on board. There’s also a Webkit2 browser in the mix, support for pinch to zoom and unified notifications for social networking services in the Events section. Here’s the specifications list for N9:

MeeGo will give you a simplistic UI, based on 3 home views (Events, Applications, Open Apps) and relying on swipe gestures to go back to the Home view.
