LG announces Optimus One and Chic, Froyo upgrades on the way

LG will expand their Optimus range with two entry-level smartphones – Optimus One and Optimus Chic. They will both run on the latest Android OS v2.2 Froyo, while the current Optimus Q and Z will be granted Froyo upgrades in the coming months.
The press release announcing the existence of Optimus Chic and One (which we couldn’t stop calling Prime) brings almost no information about their specs. Both devices will be touch-based candybars running on Android v2.2 Froyo. They will most probably have Wi-Fi connectivity and some entry-level snappers and that’s all we know so far.

LG also promises Android Froyo upgrades for their current crop of high-end Android smartphones – Optimus Q and Optimus Z. Unfortunately there is no word on an upcoming update for the original Optimus yet.

LG launches SU2300 and SU950/KU9500 Android smartphones in South Korea; Confuses the world with its naming scheme

LG has launched two new Android and Snapdragon powered smartphones – LG-SU2300 and LG-SU950/KU9500.

The first of the two is the same device as the LG2300 aka Aloha, which we knew is coming since the beginning of April. For some reason, the Korean company decided to use a different name for its domestic market. I assume that’s because their Korea-slated phones come with T-DMB mobile TV functionality.

The other phone, LG-SU950/KU9500, is an all-touchscreen device (SU2300 comes with a side-sliding QWERTY keyboard) with pretty much the same specs. We think this is the same phone as the LG P950, which again changed name to “appeal” to the Koreans.

Both LG-SU2300 and LG-SU950/KU9500 rock 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 3.5-inch WVGA AMOLED touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera, Dolby mobile surround sound, mentioned T-DMB mobile TV capability, WiFi and GPS. In addition, LG talks about their own service/app called “LG Air Sync” which should allow users to share and backup their data (contacts, media files and so on) with friends and their computers. Moreover, there’s the “Scan Search” augmented reality application pre-installed on both devices.

The LG SU2300 is set to start selling in Korean in May, when users will be able to get it with Android 1.6, only to update to version 2.1 later in July-August. As for the LG-SU950/KU9500, it will be released in June, sporting Android 2.1 right from the bat. KT and SK Telecom will get to carry both phones.

LG Mini GD880 Now Available, Supports HTML5

Back when the LG Mini GD880 was announced, it was touted as the smallest 3.2-inch touchscreen on the market. Now that it has gone on sale in Europe (starting today), we get a few more details to go with that.

Apart from the impressive size, the handset ships with the Webkit-based Phantom Browser, making it LG’s first phone to support HTML5. According the the press release, the new addition should make for “a much faster and more stable internet experience.” HTML5 compatibility means it now supports full desktop versions of Google Latitude, Google Maps, Google Buzz, Google Calendar and Gmail, while an expanded memory allows it to open up to ten browser windows at the same time. It also boasts improved Javascript and Flash support, although we’ll probably have to see about that.

The LG Mini GD880 is a sleek-looking phone, with boxy corners, textured metal accents and a button-less face. Details include a 3.2-inch resistive touchscreen, a 5.0 megapixel camera module, aGPS, stereo Bluetooth, HSDPA, WiFi and FM radio.

It also comes with preloaded social networking apps and LG Air Sync, which lets you wirelessly synchronize information between the phone, a computer and the web. A new On Screen Phone feature works hand in hand with the Air Sync, allowing you to see the phone’s UI on your computer so you can drag and drop files at will – a potentially useful feature in cases where you forget to bring your phone and end up needing files from it.

Pricing for the LG Mini GD880 will vary from country to country, so check with your local carrier.

Atom-powered LG GW990 rocks the smartphone world

The LG GW990 was the star of the company keynote speech at CES this year. The full-touch device makes a brave attempt at resurrecting the MID class of devices by introducing specs well beyond the reach of any contemporary smartphone.

The LG GW990 is built around a 4.8″ display with a resolution of 1020 x 480 and packs an 45nm Atom-core Pineview CPU of unknown clock speed. The high network data transfer rates are assured by 7.2Mbps HSDPA and 5.76Mbps HSUPA.

LG GW990 also offers a 5 megapixel camera, HD video and GPS. The operating system for this new powerhouse is a skinned version of the Linux-based Moblin OS, which looks virtually identical to the LG proprietary S-class UI.

An extra effort has been done to create a handset that is really power-efficient, consuming 10 times less electricity than last year’s Atom chipsets. That should help the 1850 mAh battery last for quite a while even with a screen of this caliber.

There is no information about the availability or the pricing of the LG GW990 just yet but we suppose it won’t be coming until late 2010 at best.
