Saudi Arabia shuts down BlackBerry messaging service

Saudi Arabia suspended BlackBerry messaging services on Friday, according to users of the smartphones, after mobile providers said the action was being taken due to security concerns.

“It has stopped,” said a BlackBerry user in the western port of Jeddah, adding that his friends also noticed that the services were being phased out on their devices. The Saudi telecommunications authority had announced on Tuesday that it ordered the country’s three mobile phone providers to block the services or face a 1.3-million-dollar fine.

RIM announces BlackBerry Bold 9650 and Pearl 3G, sort of

Two new BlackBerry smartphones are coming right next month. The candybar duo Bold 9650 and Pearl 3G leaves the old-fashioned trackball in favor of the fancy trackpad.

BlackBerry Bold 9650 and Pearl 3G share common specs – hi-res screen, 3.2 megapixel camera, microSD card slot and the full connectivity package – Wi-Fi, GPS, 3G and Bluetooth.

The Pearl 3G supports the latest Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n standard, while the Bold 9650 relies on the previous b/g one. Still, the new Bold will be released in both GSM and CDMA versions, but the Pearl 3G won’t be available for the CDMA users.

BlackBerry Bold 9650 (in CDMA obviously) will be available from Sprint USA starting next month. The Pearl 3G will hit Canada through Bell, TELUS and Rogers most probably the same time. Other market availability and pricing are yet to be announced.

Yesterday on a special ceremony at the MWC 2010 GSMA announced the winners of the Global Mobile Awards 2010. The best mobile handset this year is HTC Hero, which beat the other four nominees in this category – Samsung Star, Nokia N97 mini, BlackBerry Bold 9700 and Samsung Omnia HD.

The Orange’s mobile HD voice technology won the prize in the Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough category overtaking the Snapdragon CPU and the new Opera Mini browser, which were the other hopefuls in the category.

The Last City is the new mobile game of the year, so if you haven’t tried it yet, maybe it’s time to check it out. The other nominees in this category were The Sims 3, Farm Frenzy, Hero of Sparta and Speedhero.

Elsewhere, CBS were triumphant in the Best Mobile Service category (TV.COM). The Best Mobile Connected Device (non-handsets) went to the MiFi Intelligent Mobile Hotspot from Novatel Wireless. Global Mobile Awards 2010 nominees announced

Today GSMA announced the nominees for the Global Mobile Awards 2010 that will be finalized at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2010 this February. The nominees bring nothing surprising – starting with the best mobile game and closing with the best handset of the passed year.

The first interesting category (from where we stand) is dedicated to the mobile entertainment. The “Best Mobile Game” award will go to either The Sims 3, Farm Frenzy, Hero of Sparta, The Last City or Speedhero.

Next up is the Best Mobile Handset category where a total of six phones we’ll be jostling for the top position. The nominees include BlackBerry Bold 9700, Samsung S5230 Star, HTC Hero, Samsung I8910 Omnia HD and Nokia N97 Mini.

Then it’s turn for the Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough category where two of the most notable nominees are the Snapdragon CPU by Qualcomm and Opera Mini web browser. The battle between the nominees here will be tougher as they are hardly directly comparable and each of those deserve a pat on the back.

You can see the full list of nominees (including all the other categories we failed to mention) here. February isn’t that far, so we’ll have to wait just a bit more and see the real winners.

New BlackBerry Pearl 9100 Gets Pictured

blackberry-pearl-striker-9100-main

There’s a fresh BlackBerry Pearl model in town, the 9100 and it seems that this device just got pictured, courtesy of Crackberry.com.

We’re dealing with a 3G phone, an updated version of the BlackBerry Pearl 81xx Series smartphone. This new Pearl borrows the looks of the latest gen BlackBerry smartphones and it can be considered a narrowed down Bold 9700, that replaces its full physical QWERTY keyboard with a SureType one.

InPulse Smartwatch for Blackberry becomes official

BlackBerry-InPulse

The inPulse Smartwatch for BlackBerry is being produced by Allerta, and now that it’s official, we can safely say that it’ll rely on Bluetooth in order to bring incoming emails, text messages and other alerts from your handset to your wrist (or your ankle, if you roll like that). As for specs, you’re looking at a 1.3-inch OLED display, glass lens, full metal body, vibrating motor, microUSB port and a rechargeable battery that’s good for around four days of “normal use.” inPulse users will have to install a special BlackBerry application in order to pass along information, but those hoping to use their watch to actually send messages will be sorely disappointed. It’s up for pre-order now at $149, and if all goes well, the first ones will ship out in February.
